Homeowners have been warned to lock large presents such as bicycles out of sight in their garden sheds in the run up to Christmas.

Specialist insurance broker Footman James issued this advice after highlighting Home Office statistics showing that burglaries rise by 20 per cent in the weeks immediately before and after Christmas.

The Midlands-based broker said that the first thing people should do in the run up to Christmas is check their contents cover to see what limits they have on valuable items.

Paul Matthews, managing director of Footman James, advised: "With people buying expensive gifts in the run up to Christmas it is important to make sure your household insurance policies reflect the value of high value items such as jewellery or electrical items."

Earlier this month, isleofman.com reported the Isle of Man Constabulary as advising people to inform their neighbours if they are going away over Christmas, so that someone can keep an eye on their empty house.ADNFCR-2655-ID-800296589-ADNFCR
