Police: Make sheds secure to deter Xmas thieves

15:12:20 15th December 2010

Police in Gloucestershire have urged local residents to keep their garden sheds secure this Christmas, otherwise they could be targeted by thieves.

Paul Francis, crime prevention officer at Gloucestershire Constabulary, said that leaving windows or doors unlocked can be the Christmas present that many thieves have been hoping for this year.

He went on to say that, after Christmas, sheds and garages can be full of brand new tools and lawnmowers so they can be a popular target for burglars.

"You can make your shed secure by fitting metal grills for windows, reinforced hinges, good locks and a shed alarm," Mr Francis said.

He added that motorists should also be vigilant at this time of year as thieves will not think twice about stealing cars that have been left unattended while their windscreens defrost.

Last week, Isle of Man Constabulary said that those hiding Christmas presents in their garden sheds before the big day should make sure a good padlock or hasp is in place on the building's door. ADNFCR-2655-ID-800293425-ADNFCR
