Tidy up loose branches, garden shed owners advised

17:12:20 1st December 2010

Garden shed owners are being advised to tidy up loose branches on their land so that they can reduce the amount of damage their properties sustain if strong winds hit.

This advice comes from Saga, following a study of more than 2,000 adults that it conducted on which maintenance jobs they planned to do themselves in preparation for the winter weather.

More than a quarter of people aged over 50 said they would repair loose or missing roof tiles before the winter set in, compared to just one per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds.

Ros Altmann, director general at the Saga Group, said: "The older generations are far more willing to get hands-on when it comes to preparing their home for winter."

Saga went on to recommend that people remove any blockages in their gutters in preparation for heavy rain and ensure that they have a supply of salt on hand to put on their paths and driveways during freezing temperatures.

While people are sorting out their properties, they may also want to get their garden sheds in order, as advised by gardening enthusiast Jennie Macfie in the Herald Scotland recently. ADNFCR-2655-ID-800267000-ADNFCR
