Man confesses to burgling garden shed

17:11:20 1st November 2010

A man who burgled a garden shed wrote a letter to magistrates confessing to his crime.

Michael Fortune broke into the shed on an allotment in Havelock Terrace in Jarrow, Tyne and Weir, last month, the Shields Gazette reports.

The 31-year old sniffed gas from cylinders that he found inside and also drank six cans of lager that he discovered in the shed.

He then stole a garden fork but wrote and signed a letter to magistrates admitting what he had done.

Fortune, who has no fixed address, admitted burglary at South Tyneside Magistrates Court and his solicitor Adam Scott said: "He has been living rough, living off people's allotments. That is why it has taken the police this long to find him."

"He fully admits what he has done," the newspaper reports Mr Scott as adding.

Last week, the Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard reported that police in the area were urging residents to make sure that their garden sheds were kept secure. ADNFCR-2655-ID-800209756-ADNFCR
