How owners of garden sheds can protect their veg crops from pests

Pests are a common problem for gardeners and owners of garden sheds; however, one expert has offered tips on keeping them away from vegetable patches.
Sarah Raven of the Telegraph reports on Adrian Brocklebank's tips for pest-free vegetable gardens.
For those whose crops frequently fall prey to slugs, Mr Brocklebank recommends putting a "sacrificial crop" in place to divert them. If this is placed around the outside of the actual crops, it can prevent slugs from damaging the real produce.
If plants are in pots, a mixture of petroleum jelly and salt can be smeared around the edge to prevent slugs and snails from entering.
Meanwhile, those with carrots can prevent carrot fly by placing a three ft fence around their crops. As the carrot fly cannot get above this height, the vegetables will be protected.
Growing vegetables in the back garden is becoming increasing popular, according to Lauren Woodgate of Erin Growing Media, who notes that herbs and spices can be a good place to start for beginners.
