Growing fruits and vegetables in the back garden is increasing in popularity, with one expert describing the trend as experiencing "a real boom".
Many people are undertaking such gardening tasks in a bid to save money and be more environmentally-friendly, according to Lauren Woodgate of Erin Growing Media.
Commenting that growing herbs and spices is particularly good for beginners, she notes that "if you follow the instructions and don't over-water it and don't under-water it, then you will be absolutely fine".
Storing items such as seeds and tools in garden sheds could make the gardening process even easier.
Recent research by Waitrose shows that people throw away more than £400 worth of food per person each year, with 73 per cent feeling guilty about disposing of gone-off food.
Meanwhile, it was found that over-35s take wasting food more seriously than those who are younger.
