Tulips 'impressive and easy to grow'

10:09:20 23rd September 2010

Planting tulips now can ensure a colourful garden in spring - and they are easy to grow.

This is according to Bunny Guinness of the Telegraph, who notes that even if tulips are planted the wrong way up or at the incorrect depth, they will usually still thrive.

Meanwhile, they also look impressive whether they are planted in clusters in large flowerpots or in the garden among other blooms.

She notes that tulips that flower earlier often last for longer, so it can be a good idea to plant the bulbs now to ensure they look their best for the most amount of time.

The bulbs being somewhat prone to pests, Ms Guinness suggests using cow manure or cayenne pepper to ward off rats, squirrels and mice.

Recently, Hazel Silver of the Guardian recommended planting colourful cornflowers to brighten up monotone gardens.
