Expert advice: September gardening tips
11:09:20 14th September 2010
With the onset of autumn comes new gardening duties; two experts in the field have been looking at what should be done first.
In a piece for the Telegraph, Bunny Guinness and Phillip Eden suggest things to do and expect while gardening in September.
Ms Guinness suggests that this month is a good time to focus on cuttings, which she advises to plant in plug trays rather than straight into the ground, as the former can have more success.
She notes that it can be a few months before evergreens take root, but can have a 50 per cent success rate or more when properly cared for.
Mr Eden comments that September weather can often be an extension of summer, although the latter half of the month can bring gales.
Yesterday (September 13th), Hazel Silver of the Guardian suggested planting blue cornflowers to add a splash of colour to gardens.
