Plant cornflowers for a splash of colour

11:09:20 13th September 2010

Cornflowers can be the ideal way to brighten up a garden, one expert has suggested.

According to Hazel Silver of the Guardian, these bright blue blooms are a good flower to brighten up gardens and look attractive scattered in grass or simply planted in pots.

They are also very easy to grow, as well as hardy, which means gardeners can sow these either now or in early spring without having to worry about them not surviving a frost.

"They require a sunny, open spot and poor soil. When we think of cornflowers, we imagine running through vast fields of them, but you don't need a huge area to grow them," comments Ms Silver.

Recently, Sarah Raven of the Telegraph noted that there are flowers worth planting now in order to ensure they have strong enough roots to survive the winter and to show good growth when spring arrives.
