Ways to keep home-grown salad insect-free

Vegetables and salads are becoming more frequent fixtures of modern gardens; one expert has offered tips on how to reduce unwanted bugs appearing on leaves.
Emma Townshend of the Independent suggests that one of the best ways of keeping salads clear of insects is to plant them in polystyrene fish boxes, thereby keeping the plants' roots approximately 6 inches away from potential pests.
Meanwhile, some containers could allow for a moat around the edge of the plant, which could help prevent bugs from crawling inside.
If this is not possible, copper tape is another option for warding off unwanted insects.
Kris Collins, editor of Amateur Gardening, remarked last week that the current trend of growing foodstuffs in the back garden is here to stay, rather than a fleeting fashion.
