Gardening tasks for the end of August

16:08:20 31st August 2010

Now that autumn is approaching, one expert has offered tips on what to do in the garden during the close of August.

Anna Pavord of the Independent suggests that rambler and climbing roses need to be pruned and that any wood removed should match the amount of plant removed.

Canes of raspberries, which have already fruited, should be taken down and new ones added in, she suggests.

Meanwhile, Ms Pavord advises that to help tomatoes ripen, any buds of new growth should be removed.

"Tie in new growths of dahlias and chrysanthemums. Disbud dahlias regularly for the best display of blooms. Trim hedges of box, beech, yew, holly, laurel privet and Leyland cypress," she comments.

Recently, Francine Raymond, writing for the Telegraph, noted that gardens can be fun places for all the family.
