Growing vegetables is 'beneficial'

11:08:20 24th August 2010

The various benefits of growing vegetables in the back garden have been extolled.

Growing food for yourself is about more than just reducing food bills, according to This Is Staffordshire.

The newspaper, which interviewed keen gardener Alison Cooke, has been looking at the positive effects of vegetable gardening.

Mrs Cooke remarks that not only does it reduce food bills and help the environment; it is also very therapeutic and relaxing, with the garden being a great place to think.

She comments: "I also use the back garden at our flat. It's not a massive area, but I can grow things in containers. We like root vegetables and have been very successful with potatoes, parsnips and beetroot so far, as well as peas and green beans."

Despite a busy full time job, Ms Cooke manages to keep up her gardening as well.

The Scotsman recently reported writer Alex Johnsons views on garden sheds being perfect places to work and think.
