The majority of gardens will have the lawn itself as its largest feature, even if there are a number of plants included.

A number of ways to ensure a good-looking lawn are available, which the Essential Garden Guide has been looking at this week.

Planning is cited as the most important step - it is necessary to consider the area your lawn is to take up to ensure ease of mowing in the future.

The type of soil within the garden should also be considered - this is an important factor to look at before choosing which type of grass a garden should contain.

Other tips include investing in a sprinkler system to keep your grass regularly watered, as well as loosening the soil around plants.

Last week, Francine Raymond of the Telegraph recommended planting flower bulbs throughout the year to enjoy colour in the garden all year round.
