Gardening in August: tips from an expert
14:08:20 10th August 2010
Gardening in August often raises questions as to what can still be planted and whether current plants are ready to be harvested.
Speaking to the BBC, John Doherty, teacher at a garden class in Preston Lane Allotments, has given some guidance on the most important things to look out for.
He suggests that several varieties of salad are still fine to sow now, pak choi - a Chinese cabbage - being especially good. Radishes and rocket can also be sowed until the end of the month.
As a general rule, John Doherty suggests that vegetables "will tell you [when they are ready to be harvested], usually by the leaves turning yellow and falling down".
Garden sheds are great places to keep your seeds and tools for August harvesting and planting; however, they are also said to be great places to enjoy your gardening hobby from, providing the ideal location for peaceful preparation and garden planning.
