Garden sheds 'can play crucial role in home security'

South Gloucestershire Police will be touring the local area with a garden shed to advise people on the role that sheds can play in home security.
As part of the police force's Relentless: Keeping you safe roadshow, a garden shed will be taken to shopping centres and other locations across the county, with officers on hand to provide guidance about how such outbuildings can be used to keep the likes of bikes and gardening equipment secure.
"It's important to use a bike lock or chain to secure more valuable items to an anchor plate or something heavy within your shed," community safety inspector Gerry Treacy states.
Those keen on using their garden shed in the fight against thieves may want to bear in mind the police's advice to ensure that tools and ladders, which could be used by criminals to break into a house, are locked away securely in sheds.
Homeowners were also urged to install an alarm and obtain a property-marking kit from their local police station.
Such advice comes as the Garden Book blog recently noted sheds are a "handy" place for people to keep tools while they are doing a spot of gardening.
