Britons invited to vote for London 2012 Olympics garden design
A number of potential designs for the London 2012 Olympic garden were posted online, where people were invited to pick which one they believe should be brought to life for the event a while ago. With work on Olympics venues nearly completed in the east of London, the shortlist of 12 designs had been put forward in the competition, of which the winner was chosen from both the children and adult categories.
Among these dozen designs are a garden modelled on the Olympic rings, one drawn up by the great-granddaughter of a gold medallist at the 1908 London games and a canoe-themed garden complete with a paddling pool for children.
At the launch of the competition, Olympics minister, at the time, Tessa Jowell said: "It was exciting to see so many good entries for what is a unique chance for the general public to shape part of the Olympic Park. "The final shortlist reflects the traditions and quirks of British gardens, from Tudor roses, strange looking garden sheds through to garden gnomes but they are all very different designs. She said she couldn't wait to see what the British public decide."
At the same time, it is hoped that the Devon stretch of a new coastal path being built around England will be completed in time for the 2012 Olympics, with Weymouth and Portland set to host the sailing events.
