The average garden shed in the UK contains items worth nearly £1,000.

According to a survey by M&S Money, the average value of garden shed contents is £988, which is an increase of £100 compared to the figures for last year.

Lawnmowers were found to be the most popular expensive items, with 38 per cent of homeowners saying they keep them in their garden sheds.

More than a quarter of people keep bicycles in their sheds, with 22 per cent storing DIY equipment.

Despite the value of these items, 49 per cent admitted that they do not secure their garden shed all the time, which is more than double the percentage for last year.

Andrew Ferguson, M&S head of general insurance, said: "The value of items kept in sheds can mount up, as our survey shows."

Police in the Pembrokeshire village of Narberth recently warned residents to lock their garden sheds after burglars stole hundreds of pounds worth of valuables from one in the area, the Western Telegraph reported.
