'Natural fertiliser' mixed in Paris garden shed

13:07:20 13th July 2010

Paris is becoming known as a green-fingered city, with an increasing number of plots opening up.

According to the Deutsche Presse Agentur (DPA), a community garden movement - now officially known as Green Hand - is spreading across Paris and is helped to be led by Gilles Roux, 60.

Mr Roux uses his home-made natural fertiliser to ensure the vegetables grow well and he mixes up a nettle brew in a garden shed where the tools are kept.

More garden sheds could also be required as the international news agency noted there are approximately 60 community gardens across the city.

The plot waiting list currently has around 300 people on it, many of whom will want a garden shed and community patch of their own.

Among the crops grown include roses, herbs, vegetables and cornflower.

There are approximately 400 public gardens and parks in Paris, such as the Jardin du Luxembourg and the Jardin des Tuileries.
