Farm buildings such as barns, hay lofts and agricultural garages are particularly popular with affluent home buyers keen to undertake a big renovation project from beginning to end.
Mark Hughes-Morgan, writing in the Daily Mail, said that farm buildings such as these offer a wealth of opportunities for those who wish to be creative.
"Barns do wonders for the imagination. There's all that space to play with - the chance to create exactly what you want, in a rural setting, using traditional materials or opting for a radical, 21st century contemporary makeover," he stated.
Mr Hughes-Morgan went on to add that demand far outstrips supply when it comes to farm buildings, with very few coming on to the market.
He also highlighted regional differences in regards to the availability of farm buildings, with some areas of the country boasting greater amounts of stock than others.
The coalition government recently urged farmers in the south west of England to make empty farm buildings available for development into affordable housing.
