Farm buildings on the site of a former mental hospital are to be converted into retail spaces as part of a new development project in the Oxfordshire village of Cholsey.
The Oxford Times reports that Linden Homes has been given the green light to redevelop the Fairmile Hospital site by South Oxfordshire District Council into 354 homes.
According to the newspaper, the original building will be converted into 130 flats, while farm buildings will be turned into a space for a restaurant, shops and offices.
District councillor Pat Dawe said that the derelict premises are in desperate need of regeneration and this project is the perfect vehicle to achieve this.
"It was a mental hospital and, frankly, it looks like one at the moment. A further 354 families, or 1,000 people, will bring money not just into Cholsey but into Wallingford and the surrounding area," she stated.
An £11 million Roman heritage development project in the Cumbrian town of Maryport is currently under consideration and includes converting farm buildings into art galleries among other proposals.
