Farm building plans could lead to children's playgroup closure

Parents of children who attend Allen Gardens Playgroup are campaigning to stop the local council from demolishing the former farm building used by the group.

The East London Advertiser reports that Tower Hamlets council is considering evicting the company and tearing the building down.

Manager Mina Barber said she was warned last year that the former farm building would have to be knocked down due to the presence of asbestos in the roof, although the Tower Hamlets Early Years team told her it could be rebuilt in the summer months.

The farm building was once part of Spitalfields farm and was handed over to Ms Barber 19 years ago.

Aisha Mortuza, a 36-year-old project development worker, told the newspaper that she relies on the services provided by Allen Gardens Playgroup.

"This is the only affordable place in the borough. I work five days a week so I need this kind of daycare," she added.

The Manchester Evening News recently reported that farm buildings on Burgess Farm in Walkden could be knocked down to pave the way for a housing development across 50 acres of land.
