Redundant farm buildings transformed into shop and cafe

09:06:20 14th June 2010

Redundant farm buildings in rural Northumberland have been transformed into a shop and cafe, reports the Acklington Journal.

School pupils from Acklington First School attended the official opening of the on-site butcher, ice-cream parlour, coffee shop and children's play area today (June 11th).

Redundant industrial buildings at Cavil Head Farm received a £177,000 grant from One North East, the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) in the hope of creating a leisure and holiday centre.

Manager Neil Cox told the news provider: "We are thrilled to see the farm shop open as we start to transform it into a small leisure and holiday centre."

The new site has created 12 jobs and will support 30 businesses, who will sell their local produce in the shop.

RDPE is a seven year programme ending in 2013 that allocates money from the EU. Its aim is to encourage sustainable farming, forestry and the food industry.
