Winners of Budding Gardener Competition announced

18:06:20 3rd June 2010

The winners of the Budding Gardener Competition, run by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), were announced yesterday.

Until June 6th, the gardens will be on display at RHS Garden Wisley, so gardening fans can see how schoolchildren have risen to the challenge.

The aim of the competition was to design a miniature garden, which could fit into a 1m by 1m pallet.

Bourne County Primary in Eastbourne decided on a seaside theme. A class of 25 eight and nine - year-olds took part.

Their teacher wrote: "Our school is located in the town centre. There is very little green space around the school itself, which has no field, just a few hedges and trees and most of the children do not have access to a garden at home."

Furthermore, their garden used tough but beautiful plants that can withstand harsh conditions.

One of the winners was Alton Infant School in Hampshire. Its garden, entitled We've No Room To Grow, won the Green Award.

It was produced by 30 six and seven - year-olds who wanted to create an attractive but productive garden that would encourage other young people to grow plants.
