Sutton students prepare for Best School Garden Award
16:06:20 1st June 2010
Primary school pupils will be sharpening their gardening skills as they prepare their outdoor space for the Sutton in Bloom competition, reports the Sutton Guardian.
Westbourne Primary School won the Best School Garden last year and hope to do so again with their green area, which includes a garden shed used for bird watching and a range of herbs and vegetables growing among the flowers.
There is also an African Hut and an area devoted to archaeological digs, which is all maintained by the students at a lunchtime gardening club.
Mandy Kearsey, teacher at the school, told the newspaper: "The children love the Sutton in Bloom competition. Last year we took some down to the ceremony and everyone who helped was given a certificate.
"It is often the sporty children who get the glory, so this gives other children a chance."
The Sutton in Bloom competition is run every year by Sutton Borough Council, with the aim of rewarding the best gardeners and green spaces in the region.
This year's categories include best front garden, best community garden, best allotment, best wildlife garden and best school garden.
Winners will be invited to represent the borough in the London in Bloom Awards and asked to attend a lunch on July 15th.
