Gardening fans in South Yorkshire can visit a garden shortlisted for a national prize.

Wentworth Castle Gardens in Stainborough, near Barnsley, has been nominated for Country Life's Restoration of the Century Award, which celebrates the restoration of historic buildings, reports the Star.

Between 2005 and 2008 the gardens were restored in a £16 million project. Over 21,000 trees were planted, the Union Jack and Secret Garden were renovated and visitor facilities were built in the Home Farm.

A spokesperson for Wentworth Castle said: "The results of the restoration programme are already visible and areas of the Garden and Parkland are quickly recovering and beginning to show the benefits of all our hard work.

"In a few years' time, however, we will really be able to enjoy the success of the whole project, as it starts to mature."

This bank holiday weekend visitors can enjoy the rhododendron Festival, view the exotic blooms, browse stalls set up by the local church and children can participate in activities.
