Gardening TV presenter wins award at Chelsea

BBC gardening presenter Andy Sturgeon has won another award at the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show (May 25th – 29th).

Sturgeon won the Best Show Garden for his design of the Daily Telegraph garden.

It is a contemporary area with influences from the Mediterranean, Mexico, Chile and California.

The garden has open spaces of gravel, and a courtyard at the rear holding an oak tree while corten steel screens have been installed to create spaces and define views.

Sturgeon designed his first garden in 1983 and has now scooped five awards at the Chelsea Flower Show. He started by making small urban gardens and rooftop green spaces.

He has travelled the world and designs garden buildings, furniture and now lighting.

Sturgeon told the BBC: "Garden design is all about problem solving and each garden is unique and comes with its own set of problems.

"Perhaps the biggest challenge is ensuring that the garden is looked after properly once I've left or the original vision can disappear in just a few short years."

He advises people who want to get into gardening to take it slowly and not try to cram too much into the garden.
