At least £6.8 billion will be spent by British citizens on items such as garden sheds or summerhouses in order to improve their backyards reports SilverSurfer today.

About 74 per cent of Britons will be undertaking a gardening project this year according to research by GoCompare.com, the comparison site for insurance, financial services and travel products.

Approximately 12 per cent of those polled wanted to completely redesign their gardens this year while some have decided to spend money on gardening projects instead of going on holiday.

One in eight hope that improvements to the garden will increase their house price.

Unfortunately about 24 per cent were concerned with security and worried about leaving items outside, even in garden sheds.

John Miles, head of home and pet insurance at GoCompare.com, told the news provider: "For many people the Chelsea Flower Show signals that it's time to get out in the garden. Our research shows that green fingered Brits are set to spend a collective fortune on garden projects this year."

He also advised those who were concerned about garden security to invest in fences and security lighting.
