Eco-gardening on show at school

17:05:20 14th May 2010

The garden club at Bredon Hill Middle School (BHMS) has got the tools out of the garden shed in preparation for an open garden event in the summer.

On June 12th and 13th visitors will be able to look around the garden as part of the event in Ashton-Under-Hill.

Children have been planting seeds and creating a rainbow border, possibly with spades from the garden shed, and the school is focused on biodiversity.

BHMS has already won a GOLD Green Tree Award from the Woodland Trust and has a wooden plaque to display.

Students are keeping a record of all the species they see in the garden until May 19th and will make improvements to the wildlife area where newts have recently started swimming.

Ms Bankes, a teacher at the school, said: "The Award aims to reward schools every time they participate in inspirational learning events, projects or initiatives provided by the Woodland Trust. This was achieved by the Eco-School Committee recycling, garden club tree planting and the pupil support group woodland walks."

BHMS is also working towards level three of the Royal Horticultural Society's School Gardening Scheme which encourages schools to get gardening by providing a free start-up kit, advice and tips and rewards schools that do well.
