Children who like flowers but aren't allowed in the garden shed can visit Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) gardens for free this August.

During the school holidays in August children under 16 can enter any of the four RHS gardens for free when accompanied by an adult and participate in some of the fun events that are being held.

Youngsters could get their hands on a tool from a garden shed and search for insects on one of the guided bug hunts that take place at Hyde Hall in Essex on August 5th, 11th and 24th.

Jim Gardiner, chief curator of the RHS gardens, said: "A visit to an RHS garden makes a great day out for all the family.

"We hope that families will enjoy repeat visits to our gardens and that parents will be encouraged to involve their children in gardening when they get back at home."

Other free activities running throughout August include a forest party at Harlow Carr in Yorkshire; Rosemoor in Devon will be hosting art and craft workshops, face painting and storytelling.

Wisley in Surrey will help children discover their outdoor skills through den building, tracking and camouflage, and also give them the chance to conquer the sunflower maze.

RHS garden Wisley won Large Visitor Attraction of the Year in the 2010 Enjoy England awards for Excellence on April 23rd.
