Gardening expert opens school garden

17:05:20 12th May 2010

Junior school children showed off the gardening skills they had learnt using equipment from the garden shed to a gardening expert yesterday, reports the Advertiser 24.

Christine Walkden, resident gardening expert on BBC's The One Show, opened the garden and orchard at St Felix School, Southwold.

The new garden is sponsored by the Barchester Healthcare Foundation, which helps elderly people stay mobile, and it supported a teacher who arranged the event.

Simon Marsden, the teacher at St Felix's who arranged the visit, told the news provider: "We are absolutely delighted that Christine has been able to visit us. The children have had a fantastic day, full of interesting information and workshops."

He added that the school's gardening club had been working very hard which made the official opening of the garden rewarding.

Ms Walkden answered student's questions about gardening and ran several workshops about watering plants and caring for vegetables correctly.

She has been a horticulturist for at least 35 years and writes books, trains others, lectures and guides tours as well as being a gardener.
