Garden sheds celebrated as part of urban gardening

Garden sheds, hammocks and plants overlooking a northern city are all part of the highest rooftop garden in Leeds, reports the Guardian.

An event was held at the garden on top of Candle House, a new residential tower in the Granary Wharf development on the waterfront which is a diverse community

in the city, to celebrate urban gardening.

A talk was held by Martin Wainwright, northern editor of the news provider about his own flower collection at his family home.

Leeds civic architect John Thorp spoke about urban gardening and his plans for Holbeck Urban Village which hopes to set new standards in sustainable development and create over 5,000 jobs in creative media.

He wants to create colourful urban gardens and was quoted as saying: "Splashes of natural beauty were slowly and quietly being created in the area."

Gardening fans from the Holbeck area are preparing to enter the Yorkshire in Bloom competition next year. It is run by the Royal Horticultural Society, which wants to encourage community gardening and rewards attractive communal areas, front gardens and allotments.
