Communities encouraged to get gardening

17:05:20 10th May 2010

Residents from Bupa care homes will be dusting off tools kept in the garden shed to take part in Community Crops.

Gardening fans are being asked to volunteer to help with sowing and planting seeds, and grow their own fruit and vegetables.

The Bupa initiative aims to promote the health benefits that can be gained through gardening. Getting the lawn mower out of the garden shed can improve cardiovascular health.

Care home residents across the country are also giving local groups free seeds to encourage them to grow their own food.

Elisha Gardner, Bupa's community affairs assistant, said: "There are some great reasons to get growing – it keeps you active, you get plenty of fresh air and you can enjoy dishing up your own home grown fruit and veg."

The Prince's Trust is supporting the campaign which runs throughout May.

Young people from disadvantaged backgrounds can get involved and engage with other generations, believes Julie Skipp, spokesperson for the Prince's Trust.
