Gardening jobs for May
16:05:20 6th May 2010
There are plenty of jobs for gardening fans to do in May such as getting the tools out of the garden shed to trim plants, suggests Dan Pearson in the Guardian.
Wisley-trained designer Pearson, who has created five show gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, has given some tips about what gardening jobs to do this month.
Cutting perennials with tools stored in the garden shed is a must. Asters, helenium and eupatorium should be trimmed to knee height because this will create a stockier plant.
Pearson told the newspaper: "May is a month that sees the seasons changing again, with spring rolling into early summer. It is a glorious month, greener than any other, with potential still in the air."
Although he warns that some areas of the UK may still be affected by frost, the expert suggests it should be fine by mid-May, to move plants that were kept in outdoor buildings back into the garden.
Other jobs that can be done this month include planting tomatoes in the warmest spot available, leaving the grass to grow for a few weeks and replenishing pale-looking flowers' iron supply.
