Summerhouse to monitor Anglesey red squirrels

17:04:20 21st April 2010

While summerhouses are usually used for relaxing in back gardens, conservationists in Wales have set one up in order to keep their eyes on red squirrels.

Just recently, the animals were spotted in the gardens of Plas Newydd, the home of the Marquess of Anglesey, for the first time in more than two decades, the BBC reports.

Now, in a bid to keep track of the new guests, staff at the National Trust site have reportedly set up a new observation post within a summerhouse.

They will increase their efforts over the summer months by inviting guests to report their sightings, according to the news provider.

"We are so excited that the red squirrels are happy in their new home," Plas Newydd property manager Jane Richardson told the BBC.

"We intend to set up a reporting area in the summerhouse so that visitors can tell us when they spot them."

The National Trust maintains dozens of historic summerhouses across the country, including one at the Vyne Estate in Hampshire, believed to be the oldest domed garden building in all of England.
