Garden shed sales have 'yet to flourish'
The number of shoppers filling up their garden sheds was down over the Easter weekend compared to the same period last year, according to a research company.
Synovate Retail Performance revealed yesterday (April 19th) that the gardening sector had yet to get going as figures for other retail areas had increased.
The number of people buying garden sheds and spending money on gardening over the Easter period (April 2nd to April 5th) dropped to 6.6 per cent from 2009.
Dr Tim Denison, Synovate's Director of Retail Intelligence, said: "Shoppers are going quietly about their business, not with the gusto and carefree spirit of yesteryear but with a sense of sobriety and careful consideration."
He added that the cold weather which "lacked sunshine and warmth" was a factor in the decrease.
Other retail areas that witnessed a decline in numbers were home improvement and DIY. However there was a welcome uplift in numbers of non-food trade over the period.
Gardening outlets enjoyed a boost in sales over the Easter period, the Horticultural Trades Association revealed, which signals a good season.
