Garden shed perfect place for early seed potatoes

Buying early seed potatoes and laying them out in the garden shed helps them to start sprouting, it has been claimed.

Gardening expert Colin Evans wrote in a column for the BBC that the potatoes should be placed in trays or on paper in a "light an airy" place like a greenhouse or garden shed.

They will then start to show signs of shooting within "a matter of weeks" before planting them into larger pots or the ground during March.

Mr Evans was commenting on the start of spring and what gardeners can be doing during this time.

He also advised that adding colour to garden can be achieved now by planting Polyanthus and Violas which are all in full flower.

"If your garden lacks spring colour in the form of bulbs then purchase pots of bulbs in full flower and plant them well below the soil surface to give the garden a feeling of spring."

Meanwhile, homeowners have been advised by the Royal Horticultural Society to check the chemicals in their garden sheds following a number of changes to the pesticides and herbicides available for use, the Telegraph reports.
