Garden sheds need to be secure, residents warned

Allotment owners have been advised to protect their garden shed and tools this season, with residents in Essex being offered free alarms.

Essex Police is offering anyone who belongs to Allotment Watch in Tendring free shed alarms, reports Clacton & Frinton Gazette.

The scheme is similar to Neighbourhood Watch and is free to join, with members receiving information and advice from police about incidents in their area.

Essex Watch administrator Paul Teague told the news provider that residents should be more vigilant.

"It's getting to that time of year now when the weather is about to get warmer and people are thinking about getting back into the allotment," he said.

"Expensive gardening equipment therefore needs to be adequately secured. The shed alarms are an excellent deterrent to a thief and are easy to install."

Residents were also advised to invest in a padlock for their shed door and to mark expensive equipment with a UV pen to make it easier to trace if stolen, the Gazette states.
