Postmistress operates business from garden shed

A Scottish woman who has run a post office from her garden shed since 1983 has no plans to retire, it has been reported.

Esther Brauer, 78, has served the remote community of Kylesku in the Scottish Highlands for 56 years, the Times reports.

She delivered the post on an 18-mile round for ten years and at the age of 60 gave it up after learning to use a computer and becoming a postmistress.

Mrs Brauer told the news provider that she will continue for as long as she can.

"It is a small community which needs a post office. I managed to escape the closures, which is a great relief," she said.

"I can't see anyone else taking it over … it is a lifeline service to the locals, and is very much used by visitors."

The nearest post office is ten miles away, said Mrs Brauer.

Meanwhile, a garden shed in Scotland has been used to develop a life-saving water filtering device.

Motherwelltimes.co.uk reports that Jerviston resident Jim Rae invented the STAG Filter Unit after spending six years in Africa witnessing people dying due to severely polluted water.
