UK urban dwellers seek eco garden sheds

Establishing a recycling garden shed is one of the top eco-design improvements that UK people wish to make to their outside areas, new research has found.

A study by woodcare manufacturer Ronseal reveals that 80 per cent of UK city dwellers want to improve their urban gardens, but a lack of time and knowledge are the biggest barriers.

When asked what dream eco-design improvements they would make to their outside areas if money and time were no object, 21 per cent said a vegetable and herb garden, 18 per cent wind turbines or solar panels and 13 per cent said a recycling shed.

The research was conducted as part of Urban Gardens Week 2010, working with celebrity gardener Charlie Dimmock.

Commenting on the findings, Ms Dimmock said: "Building a wooden compost area, establishing a recycling space in a shed, or growing your own herbs in a window box, are all simple steps that can make a real difference.

"All it takes is the right tools, and a little imagination."
