Listed farm buildings to form part of new development

Historic farm buildings in Thetford are to be transformed into a new housing development, much to the dismay of local residents, it has been reported.

Planning permission has been granted for the creation of 26 homes at Abbey Barns, which includes demolitions, conversions and construction of new buildings, the Thetford & Brandon Times reports.

The move has been met with opposition from locals who fought against turning the 19th century site, which is currently for sale, into a residential development.

Thetford Society Environment Committee chairman Stuart Wilson told the news provider that a "vital opportunity" to improve the heritage of the area has been missed.

"The onus is now on Breckland Council, English Heritage and the developers to ensure the buildings don't deteriorate further and that they can put this residential development into being," he said.

The Abbey Barns and associated cottages are grade one listed buildings dating back to 1400, according to the Thetford Society.ADNFCR-2655-ID-19608556-ADNFCR
