Advice for a snowy garden offered
19:01:20 6th January 2010
Tips for people who want to enjoy their gardens despite the heavy snowfall across the UK have been provided by Jane Perrone, gardening editor of the Guardian today (January 6th).
Although many may assume that little more than building a snowman or admiring the wintry scenery is on the cards, there are actually many gardening jobs which can be done, she wrote for the publication.
Gardeners should ensure that birds are provided with extra food, which can be as simple as kitchen leftovers like old bread.
People whose garden provides a home for chickens also need to put out extra food and make sure that water supplies are not frozen.
Shrubs and trees should be protected from snow, which can damage them by causing branches to break. The best way to prevent this is by sweeping snowfall off with a broom, while the same goes for garden netting.
Widespread snowfall has been experienced by almost all parts of the UK this week, with the Met Office issuing a weather warning for every region in the country.
