Aberdeen garden plans unveiled

16:01:20 4th January 2010

Proposals for new public gardens at the centre of Aberdeen have been announced, the BBC reports today (January 4th).

Plans to build a new square at Union Terrace Gardens will now include a major public green space.

A consultation is being launched on the project this month with the group behind the plans, Aberdeen City and Shire Economic Future promising a unique and inspiring green space.

The gardens are set to make up half of the scheme's five acres.

Chairman of the City Square Project Tom Smith told the news provider: "The current gardens are about two-and-a-half acres. Our ambition is to have the same, if not more, green space than at present but green space which is more accessible and more visible.

"We will be researching gardens and international garden designers around the world and may even launch an international design competition to see how we could deliver something extra special."

Millionaire Sir Ian Wood is backing the regeneration plans and has pledged £50 million of his own money towards their realisation.
