Garden shed transformed into naval museum

22:12:20 29th December 2009

A man from Plymouth has converted his garden shed into one of the UK's smallest museums.

Robert Carter transformed his wooden shed over many years into a fully-fledged maritime museum.

Included in the garden building are hundreds of exhibits from Britain's naval history, including a powder keg from the Battle of Trafalgar, maritime uniforms and tools from the HMS Bulldog.

In true swashbuckling style, the 12ft by 6ft museum, which is free to explore, also contains cutlasses and pieces of eight.

"It is great to see people's reactions when they come in," said Mr Carter.

The south England resident is not the only person to have transformed his garden shed into something other than a place to store the lawnmower.

Recently it was revealed that revered modern artist Damien Hirst has been using his garden shed as a studio in which he has been learning to paint watercolours.
