Pupils learn about nature in new garden

Schoolchildren in South Tyneside will benefit from a new garden which opened its doors this week, being set up to teach the youngsters about wildlife and the environment.
The new garden at Hedworthfield Primary School was supported financially by a local printing company, the Shields Gazette reported today (December 10th).
It is hoped that as well as being a resource for learning, the garden will help under-pressure species in the local area.
A pond was built into the garden so that the children who use the new space can learn about creatures that live in water, and has been constructed complete with a bridge and seats.
Log piles have also been placed around the garden to provide a habitat for hibernating small mammals such as hedgehogs.
Deputy headteacher Jill Lockwood told the news provider: "The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves planting trees and making bird boxes.
"It was a very fun and positive way of teaching them about the environment, and we´re looking forward to going back and doing more work there."
