Home-grown fruit and vegetables are the secret of longevity, residents of a village in Somerset have claimed.

Montacute in Somerset was found to be the village with the highest life expectancy in Britain after a study of millions of pension records, with its residents living on average beyond the age of 90.

Shortcut to Malvern MPB Garden Retreat greenhouse Storage Shed RangeMost of the village´s 680 population are able to grow fruit and vegetables, including great grandmother and life-long resident Shirley Hann, who told the news provider: "It seems that growing our own vegetables does have a bearing on how long we live.

"People here all have their allotments or a little vegetable patch in their back garden."

Another elderly residents, Charlie Northam aged 89 told the Daily Mail that he believes growing fruit and vegetables for over 40 years for himself and his wife have helped them live long and healthy lives.

Recently, the Royal Horticultural Society offered tips and advice for those wanting to grow their own food outdoors.
