Potted Christmas trees dubbed ´bad value´
People have been warned against buying potted ´living´ Christmas trees this festive season, the Daily Telegraph reports.
Many gardeners are tempted to buy the trees in pots of earth so that they can plant them in their garden after the holiday season.
Those concerned for the environment are often uncomfortable buying a tree which soon dies and has to be discarded.
However, an investigation into the trees by consumer magazine Which? found that they are often unable to survive longer than a few weeks, with damaged roots and insufficiently-large pots limiting their chances of survival in many cases.
It also found that while ´living´ trees cost more than traditional cut ones, some varieties shed their spines quickly.
The only variety it was able to recommend were trees grown from seed in a pot rather than dug up and placed in one, although these are the most labour-intensive to grow and cost the most.
Head of research at Which? Richard Gianfrancesco told the news provider: "If you only want your tree to last for one Christmas, don´t bother spending money on a repotted or container grown tree."
