Winter months crucial for healthy lawn

If gardeners want to ensure that their lawn maintains its health and vigour for the spring, they must not lock up their sheds during the winter months.

There are many things gardeners need to do to keep up their grass in the winter, according to tradespeople recommendation website Ratedpeople.com.

Leaving clippings on the lawn can act as a form of fertiliser, as they contain valuable nutrients. This means the lawn can shoot up faster when warmer days come in spring.

Grass clippings could be stored in a garden shed before being used as a mulch on garden beds over the winter.

Ottokar Rosenberger of Ratedpeople commented: "Leaving a fine layer of clippings and debris is generally considered good practice for lawn preservation, as well as ensuring that the level of thatch above the soil is not too high."

Last week, the Daily Telegraph recommended that gardeners use wet conditions at this time of year to uproot unwanted weeds.
