Gardening to be excluded from MPs expenses
MPs should no longer be able to claim for gardening expenses, Sir Christopher Kelly, who is leading the inquiry into MPs expenses, has said.
In the expenses scandal earlier this year, claims involving gardening featured prominently. Sir Peter Viggers, MP for Gosport, gained notoriety for claiming £1,645 to buy a duck house for his garden.
Douglas Hogg MP was criticised for claiming back the cleaning costs of his moat while David Heathcoat-Amory MP charged taxpayers for over 500 sacks of manure for his garden.
Last month, Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg was asked to pay back £910 of gardening costs.
Sir Christopher Kelly is proposing rule changes to prevent members of parliament claiming for gardening costs, which would mean they have to foot the bill themselves for improvements in their backyards.
Representatives will also be prevented from making claims for cleaning expenses which have also proved controversial.
