Garden is home for meerkats
A Plymouth family have transformed their garden into a haven for meerkats, The Times reports today (October 29th.)
Mark Carthy turned the space into an ideal home for the furry creatures by erecting a sandpit 4ft deep, a water feature for the animals to play in and areas of grass.
The meerkats and their new home were a present for his partnerīs 28th birthday last week.
"We were told we wouldnīt be able to tame them, but they eat out of my hand", Mr Carthy, who hopes to be able to breed the animals in the future, told the newspaper. The creaturesī diet includes meat, fruit and insects.
Meerkats in the wild live mainly in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa in groups of between 20 and 50 animals. They are well known for leaving one animal to stand on guard while they forage or hunt for food in a group.
